Working with Manchester Leisure, Parks North, Northwards Housing, local Councillors and other parties, it is the group's aim to facilitate over 150k of improvements over the next 2 years.

The Dam Head

Community Centre Group

o

Two Residents Associations, The Youth Service and Northwards Housing are working together to create a new community facility for Charlestown.

o

With the support of local councillors and the Northwards Surveyor's Team, a large former store room in the Dam Head Housing Office complex is currently being refurbished to serve as a community centre.

Volunteers are needed to help with tasks such as decorating, advertising, distributing leaflets and of course to staff the centre once it is open. To find out more about volunteer opportunities, go to the "contact Us" section of this site.

Youth Groups

o

GIRLS

The Girls Youth Group meets every Wednesday evening, 6pm, at the Community Room, White Moss Neighbourhood Office, corner of Whitemoss Road and Rochdale Road.

BOYS

Similarly to the girls group, the boys meet once week, though on a Tuesday evening from 6pm, also at the Whitemoss Neighbourhood Office.

Both groups engage the youths in activities that include arts & craft, sports, dance, and similar pastimes.

Any youths wishing to join may just show up on the night. Written parental consent may be required. Please speak to the facilitator on the night.

Gardening Competition

Started in 2005, this competition is designed to reward local residents for making Dam Head a better place to live in.

Organised by DAMRA, all gardens on the estate are automatically entered. The winners are then chosen by judges drawn from Manchester Housing, the local councillors and committee members.

The best 3 gardens earn their residents a cash prize, with the runners up receiving award certificates.

The pictures show one of the residents receiving an award from councillor Eric Hobin at a social gathering arranged to honour residents' achievements and an image of one of the winning gardens. You may wonder about the washing line? The judges felt that gardens ought to be used, not just displayed, and washing lines, rabbit hutches and sun loungers earned residents extra points.

Charlestown in Bloom -

Dam Head & other local TA's taking part

Being part of Britain in Bloom and North West in Bloom, a nationwide initiative, started way back in 1963, that has grown into the largest horticultural campaign in Europe - Blackley & Charlestown in Bloom is our local offshoot.

Every year, hundreds of communities are involved, from tiny rural villages to the largest cities. Blackley in Bloom won the "Runners Up" award for coming second in the urban category.

The picture shows Joan Fitzgerald, our Chair, charming one of the "In Bloom" judges.

For next year's competition, DAMRA have teamed up with other TA's, MCR City Council Environmental Campaigns Team, and our Ward Coordinators, to deliver an improved entry.

Christmas Competition

Following on from the success of the Gardening Competition, DAMRA are funding an annual Christmas decor competition which is now in its thrid year.. This is to encourage residents to brighten up the estate with festive lighting, Christmas trees and seasonal decorations. There are two categories, one for Best House and one for Best Window Display (Flats). There are 60 in prize money for each category.

Again, all properties on the estate will be entered automatically and the winners chosen much in the same way as the gardening competition.

So, get decorating when the festive season arrives.
